13-year-old Luke begins keeping a diary after birdpocalypse happens… He wants to preserve his past memories as well as document his new experiences as the world reels from this sudden change. Birds are like zombies, but they aren’t his only concern. Humans have become desperate as supplies run low and harsh weather ensues. Luckily, Luke meets Tabby and together they devise a plan. Along the way, they face internal and external struggles. Will they find the strength to persevere through it all?
About this Resource:
This is one story split into five passages of approximately 500 words each. It is roughly at the 810 – 1000 Lexile level. Each passage has 10 questions (8 multiple choice and 2 short answer).
- The multiple-choice questions explore vocabulary, inference, story development, figurative language, author’s purpose, synonyms, and more!
- Short answer questions ask students to explore deeper connections with the text and themselves. There are add-on lesson ideas, growth mindset connections, SEL, and teacher resource ideas.
These passages can be used as weekly or daily reading. Each passage includes vocabulary, figurative language, and much more. Whether you use these reading passages as homework, part of a larger lesson, part of a reading center, or as daily bell ringers or warm-ups they are sure to build your students’ reading comprehension skills (just check out all the great reviews).
While these are designed with middle schoolers in mind, 4th through 9th grades can benefit from the practice, the vocabulary work, and the comprehension activities.
