About this Resource:
Each story is split into five passages of approximately 500 words each are roughly at the 810 – 1000 Lexile level. Each passage has 10 questions (8 multiple choice and 2 short answer).
- The multiple-choice questions explore vocabulary, inference, story development, figurative language, author’s purpose, synonyms, and more!
- Short answer questions ask students to explore deeper connections with the text and themselves. There are add-on lesson ideas, growth mindset connections, SEL, and teacher resource ideas.

While these are designed with middle schoolers in mind, 4th through 9th grades can benefit from the practice, the vocabulary work, and the comprehension activities.

“Grad Night” –Â
Summary of Story:
“Grad Night” is about two life-long, eighth-grade friends, Kelsey and Nate. They are about to enjoy their Grad Night celebration at the prestigious Atherton Prep Academy when news about Nate going to a different high school leaks to Kelsey. Deeply hurt that Nate didn’t tell her sooner, Kelsey storms off. Soon, the kids are greeted by the ghost of a former student whose own experience with a failed friendship led to his demise. Can he help them before it’s too late? Will they learn to repair what is most valuable to them?
“Ski Trip” –
Summary of Story:
A class ski trip ends abruptly when a sudden blizzard rolls in knocking out the power and the heat. As the school buses are leaving, one student, Lucy, realizes she forgot something in her room. She begs her teacher to let her go back for it. Reluctantly, she agrees. Lucy and her friend race inside, but everything quickly falls apart. After almost running into an out-of-place girl, Lucy loses her friend, then the bus appears to have left without her. She panics and ultimately has no choice but to follow the mysterious girl’s directions toward the back of the lodge. Will Lucy figure out what’s going on? Will she find her friend? Who is the mysterious girl? We may never know.
“Treasure” –
Summary of Story:
An adventurous girl, along with her friend and dog, follow cryptic clues as part of a massive treasure hunt created by an eccentric billionaire only to discover the real treasure they find is far more valuable.
“Mystery Man” –
Summary of Story:
Mystery Man is a unique and engaging short story that follows two kids as they try to figure out how to get home after one of them gets injured on his bike. A mysterious man helps them… then vanishes. Was he a ghost? The kids may never know.
“Beach House” –
Summary of Story:
Beach House is about Shayna uncovering the mystery of a missing girl in a small beach town. The day after thinking she saw a girl get pulled under the waves, Shayna finds a bracelet. Little does she know, she’s just stumbled onto a mystery. In the end, she returns the bracelet to the girl’s mother and brings peace to a hurting family.
“Camping” –
Summary of Story:
Nora’s annual family vacation to Lake Minnetonka is anything but normal. She ends up meeting an unusual boy who inadvertently teaches her to appreciate her family and not take the time she has with them for granted. (Spoiler!) When she finds out the boy is actually a ghost who is starting to forget his happy memories, she helps him relive what he enjoyed most about his summers at the lake.
“Hunting” –
Summary of Story:
Two people explore haunted locations on a mission to prove ghosts really do exist… Only this time they may have met their match. Mike and his friend attempt to catch evidence through typical means only to discover this negative energy has other plans. Once they are in the basement, they realize they are overmatched… But will they both make it out? Will anyone make it out…?
“The End” –
Summary of Story:
13-year-old Luke begins keeping a diary after birdpocalypse happens… He wants to preserve his past memories as well as document his new experiences as the world reels from this sudden change. Birds are like zombies, but they aren’t his only concern. Humans have become desperate as supplies run low and harsh weather ensues. Luckily, Luke meets Tabby and together they devise a plan. Along the way, they face internal and external struggles. Will they find the strength to persevere through it all?
“Dug Up” –
Summary of Story:
Riley decides to enter the school science fair after hearing that the prize is a brand-new bike, something she’s wanted for a long time since her family can’t afford one. As she thinks about project ideas, she also helps plant a new garden for her neighbor. As she is doing this, she discovers something in the dirt and digs it up. When she can’t figure out what it is, she realizes it would be perfect for a science project. Is it alien? Is it animal? Does she win first place and get a new bike? This is an engaging story students will relate to and be engaged by.
